Level 1 Mathematics
Course Description

Mathematics is compulsory at Level 1. For most students, this Level 1 Maths course will be the appropriate choice. However, students who struggle and who need to focus their efforts on gaining the Numeracy co-requisite will benefit from requesting entry to the Level 1 Numeracy course.
Level 1 Mathematics is recommended for students who have a strength in algebraic thinking and/or who wish to open pathways to careers such as Engineering or Architecture. This course progresses to Level 2 Mathematics and involves the foundation skills for Level 2 Mathematics, Calculus, and Statistics.

Recommended Prior Learning
This course is designed to meet the needs of students who have achieved the 10 numeracy credits from the NCEA co-requisite or are above Curriculum Level 5 at the end of Year 10 (approved by HOF)
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
A scientific calculator is essential, and a graphics calculator an advantage.
Pathway
Level 1 Mathematics prepares students for Level 2 Mathematics courses and other subjects that require good mathematical skills. It is widely recognised that a good grasp of Mathematics is necessary to cope in our rapidly changing world and many careers require students to have gained success in the Achievement Standards on offer in this course.
An understanding of Mathematics is important in business, commerce, and industry. Most employers regard Mathematics as an essential skill for employees to have.

Students have the opportunity to gain a number of credits towards Level 1 NCEA from a selection of internal and external achievement standards.Credit Information

Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
