Level 1 Numeracy
Course Description

This course is designed as a supported learning course for those students who have not yet obtained Numeracy Co-requisite in Year 10. Students will be identified for this course and invited to apply based on their numeracy requirements as identified from their overall achievement in Year 10 Numeracy Assessment.
This course does not lead directly to any Year 12 Mathematics and Statistics courses, however, students can go on to take Level 1 Mathematics, and having the Numeracy Co-Requisite enables them to go on to earn NCEA Qualifications at levels 1, 2, or 3. Plus having the Numeracy Co-Requisite will open up other courses to the student that require it as a pre-requisite for entry.

This course focuses on applying all Maths strands to everyday contexts. They will develop skills in understanding, formulating, and explaining Maths processes in these contexts.
Recommended Prior Learning
Achieving at levels 3 and 4 of the Maths curriculum across Year 9 and 10 will set up students well to succeed in this course.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
A scientific calculator is essential.
Pathway
Applying Maths in everyday contexts is important for most jobs. Most employers regard Mathematics at this level as an essential skill for employees to have.
Assessment Information
Students will be working towards sitting the NCEA Digital Numeracy Assessment in June. There will be two opportunities to sit this external exam during the year.Students who pass the first opportunity, will work towards additional Numeracy-based tasks and potentially further NCEA Level 1 credits.
Students may have the opportunity to attempt additional Level 1 NCEA Mathematics Achievement Standards or Unit Standards if they achieve the Numeracy Co-Requisite during the year.

Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
