Year 10 English
Course Description
Head of Faculty/Teacher in Charge: Ms J. Collins.
The Year 10 English course will further build on students' core literacy and thinking skills through exposure to a range of literature. Students will develop their ability to critically evaluate texts and make judgements on the validity of the ideas being communicated through these.
Students will develop their understanding of how language features can be used for effect in both formal and creative contexts. They will practise recognising these features in texts, as well as using them in their own writing. Students will also continue to build on their skills in grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary use.
Students in Year 10 English will be expected to read independently for at least 10 minutes per day outside school time.
This is a core subject and will be added to your timetable automatically.
Course Overview
What is taught in courses varies from year to year. This course could include:
Descriptive Writing
In this unit students will learn and practise using a range of language features, learning to recognise these and explain the intended effects. They will also practise crafting their writing for effect, through the conscious use of language features and sensory imagery. Grammar, spelling and vocabulary skills will also be core elements of this unit.
Close Viewing
Here students will learn about the techniques used in crafting effective films. They will study how elements that we see and hear in film are manipulated to convey particular ideas. Students will practise relating these ideas to themselves and the world around them. They will express their understanding of this through a response to text essay.
Novel Study
For this unit students will study an extended text, focusing on how the text is constructed and how elements of the text convey ideas. Students will consider aspects such as character, theme, setting and events and evaluate how effectively these have been used to highlight aspects of society.
Research
In this unit students will learn about travel writing and research the history of Kaiapoi, particularly the importance of the Kaiapoi Pā. They will present their findings as an informative travel brochure, following the expected writing and layout conventions. Building on grammar, spelling and vocabulary skills will also be a part of this topic.
Reading Challenge
This is an ongoing assignment throughout the first three terms. Students will read and review at least three different texts, one of which must be an extended text. Focus areas will be how they have responded to ideas and elements in the texts, how these relate to the world around them and what the text shows them about our society or life in another place or time.

Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
