Level 3 Mathematics with Calculus
Course Description
Head of Faculty/Teacher in Charge: Mr C. Alino.
The course extends and develops the calculus work begun in Year 12. The formulation of problems in mathematical terms, use of mathematical reasoning, precision in the use of symbols, and the ability to construct and set out methodically a mathematical argument are increasingly important. This course further develops calculus and its applications, together with algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
This course aims to prepare students for the study of Mathematics, Commerce, Science, and Engineering courses at the tertiary level, and equip them with the skills and thought processes to tackle a wide variety of real-world problems in several contexts.
Note - any student taking two or more courses that require significant time away from school (such as ODED, Dual Enrolment, or Gateway) may find it difficult to cope with the demands of this course. In this case, entry will be subject to an interview with the HOF of Mathematics.
Recommended Prior Learning
Students wishing to take this course will need to have at least 14 Level 2 Mathematics credits, including 91261 (Algebra) and/or 91262 (Calculus), or HOF approval.
This course is heavily Algebra based, so a good grasp of logic and algebraic processes and concepts are critical.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
A graphics calculator is essential. Students will frequently use their computers to access and develop their skills with online resources such as Google Sheets and Desmos.
Pathway
Students continuing on to University should note that Stage 1 Mathematics papers assume students have reached a competency level in Mathematics with Calculus. Students considering majoring in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Economics, or Management Science at University or who need Mathematics as part of a Chemistry or Computer Science course are recommended to take Mathematics with Calculus.
Please note that students may do one or both of Level 3 Mathematics with Calculus and Level 3 Mathematics with Statistics. Those planning on doing any Mathematics, Science, Operations Research, or Economics at University are encouraged to take both.

Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
