Level 2 Building

Course Description

Head of Faculty/Teacher in Charge: Mr C. McAuley.

This course is designed to give students a wide range of practical skills and knowledge in the building industry. While working on these projects, they will be introduced to a large variety of hand tools and portable power tools.

This course will prepare students for a pre-trade course at the Southern Institute of Technology or Ara, or they may even be lucky enough to get into an apprenticeship straight from school.

The programme complements other schemes, such as Gateway, Careers and Skills for Living programmes, work experience, and young enterprise.

There is a huge emphasis on safety, and the students will not be starting in the workshop until they have completed Unit Standard 24354 Safe Working.

Students will also have the opportunity to be involved in the Gateway programme, which will enable them to get work experience with a tradesperson one day a week. Each student will be expected to hand the worksheets in on time for marking to ensure they do not get behind during the course.

Recommended Prior Learning

To be accepted for this course students must have earned NCEA Level 1 Literacy & Numeracy. NCEA Level 1 is an advantage. Students must also complete an application form and attend an interview.

Costs

The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
