Course Description

NZQA has merged three previous level one subjects (Business Studies, Economics & Accounting) into one course called Commerce so students can get a taste of all three areas before getting more specific in NCEA Level Two. 

Commerce is the use and exploration of accounting, economic, and business concepts and models to make sense of society and solve problems. In this subject, ākonga will build the knowledge, skills, and values they need to navigate and participate in the economic world. They will learn how participants in the economic world make decisions, and they will analyse how these decisions impact sustainability.

Ākonga will learn that decision-making is necessitated by scarcity and that decisions are informed by a variety of cultural perspectives and lenses. Learning and assessment will examine Māori, Pacific, and different approaches to commerce, and business models from whānau and organisation contexts.


Course Overview

What is taught in courses varies from year to year. This course could include:
Students will initially be introduced to the three strands of Commerce - Accounting, Business and Economics.

Other areas students will study include:

Financial tools used in making a decision eg. Cost Benefit Analysis
Setting up and carrying out their own business activity
What makes an organisation financially viable
Interdependence of areas of the economy on each other
Factors that influence and determine the price of products and services

Please note that courses will go ahead only if student numbers, staffing, and timetabling allow it.  Where a subject is oversubscribed, and there are insufficient numbers or resources to create an extra class, a ballot system may be applied.  

Costs

The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
