Course Description

This course brings the world of film and media to life in a fun and creative way.

It is the most popular course at Y10, with most students picking it as one of their options.

Media Studies and communication is a fast-growing industry, relevant in the modern world, with good pay and job prospects. Media is a great subject to learn skills that will help you if you are thinking about starting your own business one day or getting jobs in, management, public relations, law,  events coordinator, social media management, teaching, digital marketing, broadcasting, journalism, publicity, and so many other industries.

This course is part of the General Curriculum and if chosen will be one of your PART B selections.



Course Overview

What is taught in courses varies from year to year. This course could include:
We will watch some Disaster Films and then with your friends or on your own you will design your own Disaster Film pitch.

We view a comedy show (Brooklyn 99) and look at the elements that make it a comedy through a genre study.

Learn to use your smartphone to take awesome photos and films and make your social media accounts look better!

We look into conspiracy theories, fake news, and misinformation, and students pick their own conspiracy theory to analyse.

Students look at the development of a character by watching a Netflix series, they look at what has influenced and motivated that change in the character.

We explore Disney films and representation and what has made Disney films sexiest and racist in the past. We compare this by watching both versions of the film Aladdin.

Students examine the Coming of Age/teen drama films or TV series.

We explore violence in the media and how to stay safe online.

What makes a good Pixar film and structure to engage an audience.

Learn how to edit films/clips on the school computers using the latest professional standard software.

Watching short films to get ideas about what makes a good story.

Snapchat and Facebook, what is it all about?

Students build their own website using an easy and engaging platform based on a specific interest they have, eg sport, fashion, food, travel etc

Please note that courses will go ahead only if student numbers, staffing, and timetabling allow it.  Where a subject is oversubscribed, and there are insufficient numbers or resources to create an extra class, a ballot system may be applied.  

Costs

The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2024, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
