Head of Faculty/Teacher in Charge: Mr C. Alino, Mrs L. Cate.
Recommended Prior LearningThis course is designed to meet the needs of students who have achieved at least 15 Achievement Standard credits (including the Explore data using a statistical enquiry process) from the Level 1 Mathematics course.
The course involves using and interpreting data through a series of statistical investigations. The emphasis is on application to practical problems, and the use of computers is required.
It extends work done in Level 1 Mathematics and has a special focus on statistics and probability. It aims to prepare pupils for the study of Mathematics with Statistics at NCEA Level 3 and equip them with the skills to tackle a wider variety of problems in several subject areas.
Note - Any student taking two or more courses that require significant time away from school (such as ODED, Dual Enrolment, or Gateway) may find it difficult to cope with the demands of this course. In this case, entry will be subject to an interview with the HOF of Mathematics.
What is taught in courses varies from year to year. This course could include:
Statistical Inference - Using statistical methods to make an inference involves showing evidence of using each component of the statistical enquiry cycle (PPDAC).
Networks - Apply network methods in solving problems using shortest path, traversability, and spanning trees
Design a Questionnaire - Design a questionnaire involves showing evidence of using each component of the questionnaire design process.
Simulation - Investigate a situation involving elements of chance using a simulation that shows evidence of using each component of the simulation process.
Evaluate a Statistical Report - Reading a statistical report and analysing for population measures and variables, sampling methods, survey methods, sampling and possible non-sampling errors, and sample size.
Probability - This is an external consisting of three main parts: normal distribution, two-way tables, and probability trees
5 Achievement Standards are internal assessments completed in class, completed individually, and some are reports
1 Achievement Standard: External exam held at the end of the year (3 questions, multiple parts)
Any student who also studies L2MATC will need to speak to their teacher regarding the external.

Costs
KHS aims to deliver educational courses over and above that which is funded by the Ministry, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant may be requested, and we appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
