The main focus of this course is to equip students with the necessary skills to maintain and develop their personal wellbeing, both now and in the future, as well as prepare them for future academic and job opportunities.
This course offers ākonga the opportunity to experience and participate in a wide range of physical activities in a variety of contexts such as Kī o rahi, Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee and Korfball. Ākonga will explore how movement is essential to hauora, how participation enriches lives, and how movement can develop diverse capabilities. Ākonga will learn about influences on personal movement as well as movement contexts in Aotearoa. They will explore movement strategies in a variety of settings and understand kotahitanga through participation in group activities.

The course includes teaching a variety of learning outcomes in the following contexts:
Kī-o-rahi
Learn basic pūrakau and tikanga behind kI-o-rahi and biophysical principles that relate to the game such as anatomy and biomechanics.
Kotahitanga
Apply strategies in a team environment to improve kotahitanga through spikeball and volleyball. Some strategies include communication, problem solving, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga.
Practical activity
Identify and apply a range of defense and attack strategies in the context of korfball and volleyball.
Joys of the poi
Experience a range of different community activities and understand the influences of Te Ao Māori and socio-cultural factors that influence people in the Kaiapoi community.
This NCEA Level One course offers four assessments over the year. Students have the opportunity to complete two practicals and two theory lessons a week. The assessments range from practical assessments to report writing using video footage from practical lessons and reflections collected throughout the year.

Please note that courses will go ahead only if student numbers, staffing, and timetabling allow it. Where a subject is oversubscribed, and there are insufficient numbers or resources to create an extra class, a ballot system may be applied.
Costs
KHS aims to deliver educational courses over and above that which is funded by the Ministry, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant may be requested, and we appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
