Level 2 Physical Education and Sports Science
Course Description
Head of Faculty/Teacher in Charge: Miss A. Fowler, Mr P. McAllister.
This theoretical and practical course provides background knowledge for all aspects of health and physical well-being. During this course, students will develop an understanding of the different biophysical aspects (including anatomy, skill learning and biomechanics) and apply this to a motor skill.
In addition to this students will examine a significant sporting event and explore its impact on self, others, and society. This course also offers students the opportunity to improve their physical performance skills and plan an event for the benefit of the wider school community.
Course Overview
What is taught in courses varies from year to year. This course could include:
Biophysical principles
Students will analyse a skill and apply their understanding of human anatomy, biomechanics and motor skill learning by comparing their skill to an expert.
Sporting event/festival
Students will examine using SPEEECH factors a topical sporting event/festival. This could include the Rugby/Netball World Cup, Olympic or Commonwealth games.
Social responsibility
Students will demonstrate social responsibility in a range of practical activities and reflect on their own participation.
Get up and go
Students will plan, run and review a sporting event. This can include running the School's Athletics or Swimming sports.
Practical skills
Students will develop attacking/defensive/tactical play strategies in a sporting context. This can include volleyball or other similar sports.
Recommended Prior Learning
To be accepted for this course students must have earned a minimum of 10 credits from the L1 Physical Education & Sports Science course or HOF approval. Please choose between this course and L2 Sport and Recreation, as you cannot take both.

Assessment Information
This NCEA Level Two course offers five assessments over the year. Students have the opportunity to complete two practicals and two theory lessons a week. The assessments range from practical assessments to report writing using video footage from practical lessons as well as booklets completed in class. All assessments are completed internally (no external exams).Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
