Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

This course has no prerequisites; open entry for all.  This course requires the ability to read and write well.  

Level 1 Classical Studies is an introductory course designed to engage student's interest in the world of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. 

In Level 1 Classical Studies, students will look into these two cultures and look at similarities or parallels between Te Ao Māori. We will focus on Greek mythology and legends with a focus on creation stories and the Greek gods. We will also look into the Art and Architecture of the Ancient world and study a key figure during these times. 

There will be multiple opportunities in this course to look at parallels between other cultures around the world and Aotearoa's unique culture. The skills learned in this course will lead students into almost any other course as Classical Studies is an interdisciplinary subject.

In this course, we will cover topics such as Greek Mythology (The Olympians), Ancient Life (dinner parties, theatre, etc.), Greek Art and Architecture with a focus on Athens and Important ancient figures and leaders (e.g. Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Spartacus).

Please note that courses will go ahead only if student numbers, staffing, and timetabling allow it.  Where a subject is oversubscribed, and there are insufficient numbers or resources to create an extra class, a ballot system may be applied.  
Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2024, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
