Level 2 Wearable Art
Course Description
Head of Faculty/Teacher in Charge: Mx R. Goldstein, Mr B. Morrison.
This is a practical 3D making course for students who want to create designs for an event or performance context. This could be film, fashion, theatre, kapa haka, dance, or a cultural performance. It can be a real or fictitious event.
This course prepares students to go on with further study at Level 3 Wearable Arts, or in other creative and fashion industries.
Course Overview
What is taught in courses varies from year to year. This course could include:
Learning can be altered from year to year depending on class interests.
*Sewing Machine Revision:
How to thread the machine and set it up, make different stitches, seams, and finishes. How to use the machine safely
*Garment or Costume Making:
Use croquis/body templates to design your own unique garment or costume theme, props, and makeup designs.
Manipulate materials to create shape and volume.
Look at how patterns fit or defy the human body.
The basics of how to alter patterns or use pattern blocks.
Explore different textiles and found materials, and use these properties to play and establish ideas.
Explore sustainable materials.
Explore natural or synthetic dyes and materials like felting or weaving.
Explore decoration and embellishments depending on your theme: Fabric painting or dying, beads, etc.
* Prop Making for Film, Fashion, or Theatre.
Make three props or a larger scenic element based on a theme of your choice.
If your class occurs during a school production year, you may create props for the stage play.
Learn how to create realistic effects using sustainable and found materials.
Sculpture using air-dry clay and paint effects.
* Special Effects makeup for the Movie, Fashion, or Theatre.
Make your own themed makeup to compliment your costume and props.
Use water-based, Kryolan professional grease-based makeup and cosmetic makeup.
Use plasticine and latex to make fake pre-made prosthetics depending on your theme. (zombies/ fairies/ warriors, or anything you can dream up.
Try making more complex plaster moulds, sculpting from professional clay, and using gelatine.
Try Stencils and blending and application techniques.
Makeup hygiene and safety.
If your class occurs during a school production year, you may create makeup effects for the stage play.
End of Year Fashion runway show to showcase your creations (costume/prop/makeup combinations).
Recommended Prior Learning
To be accepted for this course, students must have earned 12 or more credits in Level 1 Wearable Arts, or have received HOF approval.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
1x mechanical pencil
1x 20 page A4 clearfile
1x sewing guage/ruler (available at any shop that sells sewing supplies)
Pathway
Assessment Information
If students prefer a more sculpture related project, they can swap this with the "make advanced adaptations to a pattern" standard. The course uses “Entertainment and Event Technology” standards.Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
This course is eligible for subject endorsement.
This course is approved for University Entrance.

Please note that courses will go ahead only if student numbers, staffing, and timetabling allow it. Where a subject is oversubscribed, and there are insufficient numbers or resources to create an extra class, a ballot system may be applied.
Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
