Year 10 Wearable Arts Half Year
Course Description
Head of Faculty/Teacher in Charge: Mr B. Morrison.
This course is for students who want to explore, design, and make textile products, movie and stage sculptural props, and special effects makeup.

*Learning to use a sewing machine:
How to thread the machine and set it up
How to make different stitches, seams, and finishes
How to use the machine safely
*Draw Designs/Products
Gluing/ cutting/ shading/ colour work/ shape/ form/ collage. Use croquis/body templates to design your own unique garments- costumes- props-makeup designs.
* Manipulate Materials
Use the half-scale mannequins
Explore different textile material properties, and problem solve solutions.
Explore jewelry making using wire beads and sustainable found materials. Earings/ bracelette/ pendant options.
Fabric dying, stencil printing, screen printing.
* 3 Dimensional Work: garment/ Costume/ Textile Product
Learn how pattern pieces fit together and how to create volume and fit to the body.
The basics of how to alter patterns.
Make a textile product like a cushion, satchel bag, corset, or jacket. Options can vary each year.
If your class occurs during a school production year, you may create a costume for the stage play.
* Prop Making for Film, Fashion, or Theatre.
Create a prop theme of your choice.
Make a film or movie prop like a spell book or themed mask.
Learn how to create realistic effects using sustainable and found materials.
Sculpture using air-dry clay and paint effects.
If your class occurs during a school production year, you may create props for the stage play.
* Special Effects makeup for the Movie, Fashion, or Theatre.
Make fake bruises and wounds using makeup for the body.
Use water-based, Kryolan professional grease-based makeup and cosmetic makeup.
Use plasticine and latex to make fake pre-made prosthetics ( fake cuts, blisters, wounds/ embedded objects/ gills, or nicer effects like fake shells, and horns.)
Stencils and blending and application techniques.
Makeup hygiene and safety.
Make your own themed final makeup.
* End of Year Fashion runway show optional to display a costume/prop/makeup combination.
Recommended Prior Learning
This course has no prerequisites. There is an open entry for all.
Taking a previous Year 9 Visual Art course can be helpful, but it is not compulsory.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
1x mechanical pencil
1x Spiral Visual Art Diary 50 leaves
1x sewing gauge for measuring (purchase from craft or sewing shop)

Internal assessment: Achieve- Merit- Excellence Grades.1. Visual Diary Workbook of Learning.
2. Product/ Textile item/ Prop making. (Submit the actual product made).
3. Special Effect Makeup- digital submission via classroom or the Visual Diary with photos printed.

Please note that courses will go ahead only if student numbers, staffing, and timetabling allow it. Where a subject is oversubscribed, and there are insufficient numbers or resources to create an extra class, a ballot system may be applied.
Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
