Course Description

This course is designed to give students a wide range of practical skills and knowledge in the hard materials workshop. Kaiapoi High School has very well-equipped workshops, enabling students to get a very good jumpstart in the use of all this equipment.
There is a new structure with this course, where there is a huge emphasis on the students taking more ownership of their learning. They will be keeping a diary of the year's work and will be collaborating with all the key stakeholders involved in the construction of their project. The intention of this format is to give them an idea of what will happen should they choose to go into an industry environment.
During this course, the students will be working on a number of practical projects and will be introduced to a large variety of hand tools and portable power tools. There is a huge emphasis on safety and the students will not be starting in the workshop until they have completed Unit Standard 29677 "Follow Safe Workshop Practice".
Students will also have the opportunity to be involved in the Gateway program which will enable them to go out on work experience in a range of different trades from joinery, cabinet making, building, or any trade they choose to try. This will involve them being out of school one day a week.
Course Overview

- Use of hand tools
- Use of portable power tools
- Safety practices in the workshop

- Measuring and marking techniques
- Cutting and shaping wood
- Sanding and finishing wood surfaces
- Assembling wood joints
- Using machinery
Recommended Prior Learning
There are no pre-requisites for this course; open entry for all.
Pathway
This course will set students up to go to a pre-trade course at ARA, or they may even be lucky enough to get into an apprenticeship straight from school.
Assessment Information
Students will also be working through a number of Unit Standard booklets which will involve both practical and theoretical work. Each student will be expected to hand in the worksheets on time for marking to ensure they do not get behind during the course.Credit Information

Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
