Level 3 Health Education

Course Description

This course builds on the knowledge ākonga gained in the Level 2 Health Education course. They will deepen their understanding of a range of topics including health and ethical issues in New Zealand. 

They will then look at the four underlying health concepts which are the socio-ecological perspective, hauora, health promotion, and attitudes and values. Students will then apply the underlying health concepts to health and ethical issues in New Zealand. 

This course equips ākonga with the tools to think critically while also developing life-long skills to help assist them in making health-enhancing decisions for themselves, others, and society.

This course covers:

• Examining New Zealand societal health issues, e.g. child poverty

• Diseases in the Pacific

• Contemporary and ethical dilemmas, e.g. Euthanasia and public funding for IVF

• Current health practices available in New Zealand

Recommended Prior Learning

To be accepted for this course students must have earned 10 or more credits in Level 2 Health, or Level 2 Food and Nutrition or Level 2 English, or HOF approval.

Assessment Information

This NCEA Level three course offers four assessments over the year. The assessments consist of written assessments for the internals and one external exam at the end of the year. This course focuses on Level 8 of the Health & Physical Education curriculum.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

This course is eligible for subject endorsement.

This course is approved for University Entrance.

Please note that courses will go ahead only if student numbers, staffing, and timetabling allow it.  Where a subject is oversubscribed, and there are insufficient numbers or resources to create an extra class, a ballot system may be applied.  

Costs

The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
