Course Description

From television to cinema, radio to podcasts, social media to blogs and vlogs, and everything in between, media studies play a big part in our everyday lives. And it’s never been more relevant than in the internet age, where actors, singers, and personalities can make their own celebrity online using their media skills. As technology, creativity, and competition increase, these skills become more in demand all over the world.
Media Studies will equip you with the communication and technology skills needed to succeed in the modern workplace, whether in the media industry or not. Whether you choose to pursue a career in film and television, fight for your own fame, or take your skills into business, you’ll be well-equipped for what the modern workplace is looking for.

This Level 3 course will cover:
1. Students will design, write and create a four-page magazine feature article on a topic of their own choice. This will comprise of a portfolio worth 13 credits, students brainstorm, interview, photograph and write content before using Indesign or Canva to create a colourful and cohesive magazine spread.
2. Students will study the Horror Noire film genre. We look at the misrepresentation of African Americans in horror films and relate this to society.
(Looking at the “Black Lives Matter” movement, racism in American society, and the change in the role of black actors from victims to heroes)
3. There is an optional internal offered where students investigate the media coverage of a particular aspect of NZ society and analyse how they have been represented. In previous years, this was based on Gloriavale's media coverage and included a trip to the Gloriavale community on the West Coast.
Recommended Prior Learning
To be accepted for this course, students must have earned a minimum of 14 credits from L2 Media Studies or L2 English. Students must also have passed at least one external standard in either of these two subjects or have received HOF approval.

Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
