Level 1 Health Education

Course Description

This course builds on the knowledge ākonga gained in years 9 and 10 of Health Education. Students will deepen their understanding of a range of topics including, drugs and alcohol, mental health, sexuality and broadening their knowledge about models of health. In addition to this, through interactive discussions, case studies, and practical applications, students will critically analyze the societal and individual factors that influence health, while also exploring contemporary issues relevant to youth in society, such as social media, peer pressure, and vaping.

This course equips ākonga with the tools to think critically while also developing life-long skills to help assist them in making health-enhancing decisions for themselves, others, and society.

During this course students will cover a range of topics in a Health context:

Models of health
Students will understand different models of health in relation to practical experiences including Te whare tapa whā, fonofale and te wheke.

Decision making
Students will demonstrate an understanding of decision-making and tools to succeed at this.

Wellbeing
Students will demonstrate an understanding of factors that can impact well-being and decision-making and unpack strategies that can support hauora.

Recommended Prior Learning

This course has no prerequisites; open entry to all.  Please choose between this course and L1 Food and Nutrition, as you cannot take both.

Assessment Information

This course focuses on Level 6 of the Health & Physical Education curriculum and has a combination of internal (in class) and external (exam) assessments. The assessments range from report writing to in class exams.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

This course is eligible for subject endorsement.

Costs

The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
