Level 1 Drama
Course Description

In Level 1 Drama you are introduced to a world where artistic and creative abilities flourish, and where you will gain a profound understanding of yourself and the world around you. You'll master acting and staging skills, all while exploring a variety of captivating texts and contexts. This hands-on, fun-filled course encourages you to devise, interpret, analyze, and evaluate diverse dramatic forms and styles.
Expect to engage in creative thinking and spend plenty of time both in and out of class perfecting your performances.
Drama Big Ideas:
Titiro whakamuri, kōkiri whakamua: Drama is influenced by whakapapa and is a way to respond to and share identity, culture, and perspectives
Mā whero, mā pango, ka oti ai te mahi: Drama is a collaborative, creative process.
Poipoia te kākano kia puawai: Drama communicates through storytelling and creative expression to nurture and nourish people.
Te whāriki kia mōhio ai tātou ki a tātou: Meaning in performance is created through whanaungatanga.

During this course, ākonga will:
• explore ideas of culture, identity, and perspectives and integrate them into dramatic work
• recognise and engage with forms, purposes, and function of drama and reflect them in own dramatic work
• participate in theatre Aotearoa to explore Aotearoa New Zealand’s identity
• experiment with or within a creative process in drama
• experiment with developing own ideas and personal voice in creating and performing drama
• respond to and build on others’ ideas and negotiate in a collaborative process using the concepts of whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, and akoranga while remaining mindful of tikanga
• experiment with integration of drama components and processes to create drama
• analyse the relationship between drama and audience through ihi, wehi, and wana and how responses to drama are evoked
• explore the relationships between storytelling practices and theatre in the Pacific, including Aotearoa New Zealand and the realm nations (Niue, Cook Islands, and Tokelau).
Recommended Prior Learning
This is an open entry course, there are no prerequisites.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
There will be at least one trip away to view live productions. These are likely to incur a small expense. Students will view live theatre in a professional and amateur setting (The Court Theatre, Elmwood Theatre etc.)
Pathway
Drama and Dance are subjects that are helpful in career choices involving: youth work, teaching, journalism, sales and marketing, and any communication-based career. For talented students, there are growing opportunities in the film industry for actors, writers, dancers, choreographers, designers, and technical fields, such as costume, set, lighting design, and production.
Assessment Information
Students will be offered 15-20 credits, made up of 2 internals (performance and written reflection), and one external - either a production standard or a response to live theatre standard.Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
