Aspiring Outdoor Education
Course Description

This course builds on knowledge and experience gained during Approach Level Outdoor Education. This course takes students on a journey of theory, practical activity sessions (during and after school), and multi-day trips. This course is open to both Year 12 students and Year 13 students.

• Navigation
• Environmental Codes of Conduct
• Risk Assessment and Responsible Behaviour
The activities and topics are subject to change depending on the needs of the students, teacher expertise, and environmental conditions.
Recommended Prior Learning
Aspiring Outdoor Education builds on the knowledge and skills students develop through the Approach Level Outdoor Education course, but it is not essential that students took the Approach Level course.
We require students to have a basic knowledge of preparation for outdoor activities, basic map reading and navigation skills, an active interest in Outdoor Education, a good level of fitness, or have completed Approach Level Outdoor Education or have HoF approval. To be accepted for this course Year 12 and Year 13 students must have Level 1 Numeracy and Literacy.

Assessment Information
This course offers a combination of Level 2 and Level 3 credits and is comprised of unit standards (only awarded an achieved/not achieved grade).Students must show a commitment to this course and attend and complete all the off-site practical trips if they are to be successful in gaining all unit standard credits offered. Other subjects the student is taking will not suffer though, as students are given study time to catch up with work missed after being away on trips.

Costs
The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2025, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
