Level 2 Media Studies
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr B. Morrison.
From television to cinema, radio to podcasts, social media to blogs and vlogs, and everything in between – Media Studies plays a big part in our everyday lives. It has never been so relevant as now in the internet age, where actors, singers, and personalities can make their own celebrity presence online using their media skills. As technology, creativity, and competition increase, these skills become more in demand all over the world.
Media studies will equip you with the communication and technology skills needed to succeed in the modern workplace, whether in the media industry or not. Whether you choose to pursue a career in film and television, fight for your own fame, or take your skills into business, you’ll be well-equipped for what the modern workplace is looking for.
You don't have to have chosen Level 1 Media Studies to take this course.

This Level 2 course will cover:
1. Studying a character in a film and looking at their journey and growth, why and what motivates them to change, and how this affects an audience.
(This uses your observation, analytical, and writing skills. These are skills employers are consistently looking for)
2. In small groups of your choice, or individually, choose a media product to design and make. This could be any media product of your choice. Ideas could include a short film, YouTube channel, podcast, instructional video, magazine spread, website design, music video etc. This is worth 10 credits.
(This uses skills of collaboration and group work, design, and imagination. These are vital skills that are transferable to any employment and skills that employers are demanding in a modern world)
3. (Optional Credits) Students choose their own representation to study, such as: the representation of females in advertising, Donald Trump on social media, Jacinda Ardern on television, Maori in sports, etc.
(This also uses your observation, analytical, and writing skills, as well as research skills)
4. A study of a film genre (Dystopian/End of the World Films, Hunger Games, etc.).
We also relate this study to society and make links to how society and the genre have changed. This is due to teen dystopian films and the shift of the genre from film to television. (External Exam)

It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2024, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested.
