Recommended Prior Learning

To be accepted for this course students must have earned 10 or more credits from the L2 Physical Education & Sports Science course, or have HOF approval.


This course provides learning experiences that will continue to develop students’ knowledge of Sports Science and deepen their understanding of how the body works. It will also enhance students' knowledge of the role of sport in society and promote an understanding of the need for a physically active and healthy lifestyle, both now and in the future. Context includes: analysing the biocemchanics behind a skill, learning the sport of squash through coaching from a past New Zealand coach and developing a training programme to enhance performance, incorporating visits to local fitness centres. 

Ideal for those passionate about sports, this course delves into training principles, biomechanics and performance analysis. Through a blend of theoretical and practical sessions, students gain hands-on experience in fitness testing, training program design, and sport-specific skill development, preparing them for careers in sports coaching, physiotherapy, fitness training etc.

Each module includes both theory and practical work. The following topics are covered:

Training programme
Students will design and implement a training programme using a range of strategies and evaluate the effectiveness this programme has on performance improvement.

Back to the future
Students will evaluate physical activity experiences to devise strategies for lifelong well-being by participating in a range of physical activity experiences.

Squash
Students will experience coaching sessions with a technical squash coach and analyse a skill using biomechanical principles.

Assessment Information

This NCEA Level Three course offers five assessments over the year (with an optional sixth assessment if required). Students have the opportunity to complete two practicals and two theory lessons a week. The assessments range from practical assessments to report writing using video footage from practical lessons as well as booklets completed in class. All assessments are completed internally (no external exams).

Please note that courses will go ahead only if student numbers, staffing, and timetabling allow it.  Where a subject is oversubscribed, and there are insufficient numbers or resources to create an extra class, a ballot system may be applied.  

Costs

KHS aims to deliver educational courses over and above that which is funded by the Ministry, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant may be requested, and we appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
