This is a practical 3D making course for students who want to create designs for an event or performance context.
This could be film, fashion, theatre, kapa haka, dance, or a cultural performance. It can be a real or fictitious event.
What is taught in courses varies from year to year. This course could include:
In year 13 students will need to choose 4 courses from the options available. The options are: Design costumes/ Make costumes/ Design props and scenery/ Make props and scanery/ Design special effects makeup/ Create the special effects makeup.
*You can design four themed costumes of your choice. You can have one main costume and 3 supporting costumes.
* You can make your four costumes. You can create your costumes by upcycling existing garments and using found materials. The supporting costumes can involve making a smaller accentuating item. For example a waist weaving, vest, or a cape for a particular role.
* You can develop props and scenic elements for an event or performance.
* You can construct props and scenic elements for an event or performance.
*You can design special effects makeup applications to enhance your costume and props. Special effects makeup can utilise prosthetics/ stage makeup/ fashion makeup/ stencils/ and found materials.
* You can realise (create) the special effects makeup on yourself, models, performers.
Overall:
*You will create drawings to realise your designs, and models to realise your designs.
*You will experiment with materials.
*You can use the basic patterns in class or create your own.
* You should use found textiles, and recycled or donated materials.
*At the end of the year there is the opportunity to showcase your costume, props, and makeup at the fashion runway event.
*If your class occurs during a school production year, you could create for this context.
In this course, you will be offered 6 different internal standards. You will need to choose 4-5 standards to complete.
For example: Choose "Develop a costume Design" and "Realise a Costume Design", and leave out "Develop a scenic design for a given work" and "Construct Props and Scenic Elements". Other combinations are available. The course uses “Entertainment and Event Technology” standards.

Please note that courses will go ahead only if student numbers, staffing, and timetabling allow it. Where a subject is oversubscribed, and there are insufficient numbers or resources to create an extra class, a ballot system may be applied.
Costs
KHS aims to deliver educational courses over and above that which is funded by the Ministry, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant may be requested, and we appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
