Level 1 Food and Nutrition

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr P. McAllister.

In order to develop ‘health enhancing’ attitudes, knowledge, and understanding, ākonga will investigate various food-related topics including the nutritional needs of specific population groups, the current issues society is facing in relation to food and nutritional information on food labels.

Ākonga will also explore the effect that promotional material has on food choices in Aotearoa and how other cultures from around the world have impacted our eating patterns. 

This course equips ākonga with the knowledge, skills, and strategies for safe food handling and how to respond to a diverse range of food-related situations. This course is working at Level 6 of the Health & Physical Education curriculum.

Recommended Prior Learning

To be accepted for this course students must have completed Year 10 Food & Nutrition, or have HOF approval.

Pathway

Food & Nutrition is helpful if you wish to become a nutritionist, health education/advisor, or work in the areas of sports science, food marketing, or the fields of food and health in general.

Credit Information

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

This course is eligible for subject endorsement.

Costs

The Board of Trustees has again asked to opt into the Ministry of Education donation scheme. Doing so resulted in the ability to waive student fee donations. Kaiapoi High School aims to deliver quality educational courses over and above those that which is funded by the Ministry. It is likely the School will opt into the donation scheme for 2024, however parental contribution for the costs of trips and activities where participation is optional, and/or components not covered by the Government grant, may be requested. We appreciate the financial support our families make to the School.
